What are the recommended specifications to use this site?

What is QuickTime? How do I get it?

QuickTime allows you to view short sound and video clips via the Internet. There are other similar programs such as RealPlayer or Windows Media Player which offer the same functionality, but for the ESL CivicsLink program you will need QuickTime.

To obtain your free copy of the QuickTime Player, go to http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/

2.Press the "Download QuickTime" button.
3.After the download is complete, QuickTime will automatically begin installing itself.
4.An installation window will appear, with a series of prompts. You can accept the default by pressing enter to move to the next prompt until the installation process is finished.

How do I know if I have the right web browser version?

If you have Internet Explorer,

  1. Open Internet Explorer.
  2. Click on the "Help" menu in the top menu bar.
  3. Choose About Internet Explorer. The version number will be listed in the box that pops up.
  4. If the version number begins with a 4, 5, or 6, you are set. If not, you will need to download a recent version of Internet Explorer from:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/search.asp?

(note the question mark at the end)

If you have Netscape (also known as Netscape Navigator),

  1. Open Netscape.
  2. Click on the "Help" menu in the top menu bar.
  3. Choose "About Netscape."
  4. If the version number begins with a 4, 5, or 6, you are set. If not, you will need to download a recent version of Netscape from:

http://wp.netscape.com/computing/download/index.html

How do I know if I have "JavaScript enabled?"

If you have Internet Explorer,

  1. In Internet Explorer, click on the Tools menu
  2. Choose Internet Options
  3. Click the Security tab
  4. Click the Custom Level button.
  5. Click the enable button under the Active Scripting category.

If you have Netscape Navigator,

  1. Open the Edit menu and choose Preferences.
  2. Click the Advanced category.
  3. Choose Enable JavaScript for Navigator.

What if I have AOL?

Currently ESL/CivicsLink does not fully support the AOL browser. To work on the site,

1. Install one of the recommended browsers (see the minimum requirements section)

2. Dial up AOL as you normally would.

3. Open the browser of your choice in step 1. in step 1

4. Put in the ESL/CivicsLink address.
