Help Center: Technical Requirements
This page describes the necessary hardware and software needed to work in this online system. From here you can either return to the Main Help Page in this browser window or close this window and thus return to your work.

The site was developed to be inclusive of as many users as possible so technical innovations were avoided to gain a more stable environment; we hope the experience is still interactive and satisfying. A high speed connection was not assumed; the number of graphics per page was kept to a minimum except upon entering the site; once loaded, all pages that contain material that is not time sensitive are loaded only once to increase speed; when a page does not look properly, use the REFRESH or RELOAD button on your browser. The site is optimized for 650 pixels wide; resizing is allowed.

RECOMMENDED TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS . Programming has been optimized for these hardware/software combinations and will yield better access speed and interactivity; small windows and popups will work.

PLATFORM
OS: At minimum Windows 98 or Macintosh OS 9
Browser: Explorer 5 or greater, java script enabled, cookies enabled. Netscape 4.76 or greater also supported.
Plugins: Quicktime 4.2.1 and above for audio, Adobe Acrobat Reader 5.0 or above to read certain documents.

HARDWARE:
CPU and chipsets: PC/Pentium class, Macs/PowerPC; the faster the processor the better.
32 MB RAM
15" or larger Monitor
56.6 Kbps modem or faster connection.
Soundcard, speakers or headphones.

Limitations and known bugs:

1. When a new instance of a new browser window is called for from a link, a smaller window should appear. The size is variable and probably depends on the local machine's last viewed size of the browser.

2. The Quicktime player should be installed both as a plug in and as an independent application. The site defaults to the application so that the media windows are placed at the top left of the screen with only once instance of the media player open and the control buttons are consistent. If the browser overrides this default, multiple windows of the media player will appear; these should be closed as the user moves along.

MINIMUM TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS for using this site. These requirements allow a functional site but not ideal interaction with the system; the programming gracefully degrades to these standards.

PLATFORM
OS: Windows 95 or above, OR Macintosh 8 or above, OR Linux (Redhat 6 or compatible).
Browser: Explorer version 3 or greater; java script enabled, cookies enabled.
Plug ins: Quicktime 3 and above for audio

HARDWARE:
CPU and chipsets: 486 or 68040 (for Macs) processor.
16 MB RAM
15" or larger Monitor
56.6 Kbps modem.
Soundcard, speakers or headphones

Unsupported browser versions: less than 3.
Limitations and known bugs:
1. Small windows will not open the same.
2. Mouseovers will not work.
