Javascript and Cookies Tutorials

You must have both cookies and Javascript enabled to use the ESL/CivicsLink site. If you received an ALERT on the login page, then you are using a computer that does not have one or both of these turned on. The tutorials below will guide you through the process. *Note* Enabling cookies and turning on Javascript are two separate procedures, if you're not sure if you have either of them, it would be best to do both procedures.

The tutorials below correspond to the type (Netscape or Internet Explorer) and version (Netscape 4.76, IE 5.5) browser you use as well as whether you use MacIntosh or PC.

If you have any difficulties with the following procedures, please contact your facilitator for further assistance.
Enabling Javascript
PC Internet Explorer 5.x
1. Select Internet Options from the Tools menu and click the Security tab.
2. Click the Custom Level button at the bottom of the window to access the security settings.
3. Scroll down the list until you find Scripting.
4. Click Enable for all options.

Internet Explorer 4.x
1. Select Internet Options from the Tools menu and click the Security tab.
2. Click the Custom Level checkbox at the bottom of the window, followed by the Settings button to the right.
3. Scroll down the list until you find Scripting.
4. Click Enable for all options.

Netscape
1. Select Preferences from the Edit menu to open a new window.
2. Choose the Advanced option at the bottom of the left-hand list.
3. Check the Enable Javascript checkbox on the right.
Mac Internet Explorer
1. Select Preferences from the Edit menu to open the Preferences window.
2. Choose Web Browser from the list and select the Web Content option.
3. Check the Enable Scripting checkbox at the bottom of the window.

Netscape
1. Select Preferences from the Edit menu to open a new window.
2. Choose the Advanced option at the bottom of the left-hand list.
3. Check the Enable Javascript checkbox on the right.

Enabling Cookies
PC Internet Explorer 5.x

Internet Explorer 4.x
1. Select Internet Options from the Tools menu and click the Security tab.
2. Click the Custom Level checkbox at the bottom of the window, followed by the Settings button to the right.
3. Scroll down the list until you find Cookies.
4. Click Enable for Allow per-session cookies (not stored).
5. Click Enable for all options.

Netscape
1. Select Preferences from the Edit menu to open a new window.
2. Choose the Advanced option at the bottom of the left-hand list.
3. Check the Accept all cookies checkbox on the right.
Mac Internet Explorer
1. Select Preferences from the Edit menu to open the Preferences window.
2. Choose Cookies from the list.
3. Select Never Ask from the list box at the bottom of the window.

Netscape
1. Select Preferences from the Edit menu to open a new window.
2. Choose the Advanced option at the bottom of the left-hand list.
3. Check the Accept all cookies checkbox on the right.

Are you sure both Javascript and Cookies are enabled? If so, click on the NEXT button to return to the login page.

Throughout the instructions below, words that are italicized are exactly as they appear on your browser's menu (in the image these are circled in red). The images correspond to the instructions above it.

1. Click on the Tools pull-down menu on top of the screen and select Internet Options...

2. At the Internet Options panel or console, select the Security tab.

Then click on the Custom Level... button.

3. You are now at the Security Settings panel. Scroll down through the various sections until you see the Cookies section.

Then click OK.

4. At this point, you may receive a warning from Internet Explorer that you are about to make changes to your security settings. Click Yes.

5. You are now returned to the previous Internet Options panel. Click Apply (if not greyed out) and then OK on the bottom of the panel and you are all set!

5. Click on the NEXT button to return to the ESL/CivicsLink login page.
